Coach Sam is a God fearing, father, grandfather, brother, minister and retired youth athletics coach/teacher. He was the head coach of Eastshore Playgrounds in the upper 9th ward of New Orleans, Louisiana for 40 plus years of service. His entire life, Coach positioned his gift of being a father and coaching youth athletics around his strong belief in God. In the late 1970's when there was no funding/support to establish a creepy, wooded playground, Coach Sam answered the call with a lawn mower, a machete and lots of Gatorade, giving birth to what we know as Eastshore Playground. His initial inspiration was for his own kids to be active in sports and he was passionate to solve the issue of boredom amongst neighborhood inner city kids seeking recreation. He had no idea that this calling would stretch over 4 decades.
In addition to training countless youth over this timespan, Coach Sam fathered 4 amazing kids of his own: Wendy, Addison, Tim and Sam Jr. From this tribe, Sam Jr. is the Executive Director and visionary behind this tribute to his legacy. Make no mistake about it, Coach Sam's mission is to empower kids in need of a father via the vehicle of sports, and statistically speaking, the strongest need for father-figured role models is our black youth males. His empowerment approach of choice, is built on Christ-based principles.
In 2023, he decided to came out of retirement. Currently, Coach Sam is an assistant softball coach for a Louisiana middle school. Coaching 101 teaches to never quit, so a never-ending vacation never felt natural to him.
Coach Sam's purpose has ALWAYS been about God and the youth. He has been (and still is) a father figure to so many young teens from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds. His purpose is to be a father figure and provide wisdom to as many of our youth as possible; especially those experiencing socio-economical disparities. He realized early on that:
It takes a father-figure to raise a boy into a man .
It takes a man to raise a village.
It takes a village to raise a community.
It takes a community to raise a city.
It takes a city to raise a state.
It takes a state to raise a nation, a country and ultimately, the world.
FATHER'S WISDOM FOR FUTURE FATHERS:
